Megastructures
National Geographic Channel
Season 2006
The Rion-Antirion bridge has the longest span of any cable-stayed bridge in the world. It spans 2200m through the Gulf of Corinth, Greece. In addition, this bridge enters the record books with the biggest and deepest pier foundation. Its other incredible feature that no other bridge has is the capability to survive severe earthquakes since the bridge lies right above the active seismic fault line.
The question is how to build this megabridge in order to link two important regions in Greece and to welcome the Olympic flame on the way to Athens. The engineers and builders have to face so many challenges in all stages of the construction: from reinforcing the seabed, building the floating foundation, erecting the pylon, and anchoring the roadway. Let enjoy the movie to see amazing technologies and solution methods which have been applied to construct one of the most incredible bridge, the Rion-Antirion.
